"Growing Out" Not "Giving Up": Finding Renewed Energy and Engagement When the Corporate Ladder Feels Less Appealing

Why the next promotion isn't always the next answer—and that's okay.

"Define success for yourself and don't let others define it for you." — Oprah Winfrey

☕ The Promotion I Didn't Want

There was a time when I chased promotions like they were the last pair of Beyoncé tickets.

Every performance review...

Every stretch assignment...

Every certification...

Every "Can you own this?" email...

I was convinced it was all leading to the next title.

Because that's what Corporate America teaches us.

Work harder.

Stay later.

Volunteer more.

Smile through the burnout.

Maybe...

just maybe...

you'll get promoted.

Then something unexpected happened.

The opportunity I'd spent years chasing finally came into view.

And instead of excitement...

I felt tired.

Not sleepy.

Soul tired.

The kind of tired where your spirit whispers,

"Girl... are we climbing because we want to... or because we don't know what else success is supposed to look like?"

Oof.

That question sat with me longer than any promotion ever had.

And maybe...

it's sitting with you too.

📈 We've Been Sold One Definition of Success

Corporate America loves one direction.

Up.

Up the ladder.

Up the pay scale.

Up the org chart.

Up into more responsibility.

Up into more meetings.

Up into more calendar invites that could've been emails.

😂

Somewhere along the way, we started believing that if we weren't climbing...

we were coasting.

If we weren't promoted...

we were failing.

If our title didn't change...

neither had we.

But here's today's Cheeky Chick truth bomb...

💣 Growth and promotions are cousins—not twins.

One can happen without the other.

🎭 The Corporate Plot Twist Nobody Warns You About

There comes a season...

usually somewhere between surviving your third reorganization and your fifteenth "strategic transformation"...

when you realize...

You don't actually want your boss's job.

😳

You watch them.

Back-to-back meetings.

Weekend emails.

Constant firefighting.

Political chess.

Stress disguised as leadership.

Suddenly...

that title you've admired for years starts looking like...

a hostage negotiation.

😂

And then the guilt creeps in.

"Am I losing my ambition?"

"Have I become lazy?"

"Shouldn't I want more?"

No, Chick.

You don't want less.

You want different.

There's a difference.

🌱 You're Not Giving Up...

You're Growing Out.

Let's retire this idea that success only moves vertically.

Trees don't just grow taller.

They grow wider.

Roots grow deeper.

Branches stretch farther.

Fruit appears long after the roots have done their invisible work.

Your career should do the same.

Growing out means...

🌿 Learning something because it fascinates you—not because HR recommended it.

🌿 Building influence without needing another title.

🌿 Creating financial freedom outside your paycheck.

🌿 Becoming known for your wisdom, not just your workload.

🌿 Protecting your peace as fiercely as you once protected your performance rating.

That's growth too.

Actually...

I'd argue it's the best kind.

🤔 The Aha Moment

One day I realized...

I wasn't burned out from working.

I was burned out from chasing someone else's version of success.

That hit me like a coffee cup without caffeine.

Maybe your dream isn't becoming Vice President.

Maybe it's...

✨ Leaving work at 5:00 without guilt.

✨ Starting a side business.

✨ Mentoring others.

✨ Becoming debt-free.

✨ Traveling more.

✨ Writing a book.

✨ Buying an investment property.

✨ Sleeping through the night.

Corporate titles are wonderful.

But they don't automatically create meaningful lives.

📊 What Research Is Telling Us

Workplace research has been pointing to this shift for years.

According to Gallup, employees who have opportunities to learn, use their strengths, and find purpose in their work are significantly more engaged than those who simply chase promotions.

Likewise, research from Deloitte's Global Human Capital Trends continues to show that employees increasingly value flexibility, meaningful work, continuous learning, and well-being alongside compensation and career advancement.

Translation?

People aren't becoming less ambitious.

They're becoming more intentional.

And honestly...

it's about time.

🚪Five Ways to Grow Out Instead of Burn Out

🌟 1. Become Multi-Dimensional

Your job title shouldn't be your only identity.

You're more than:

Payroll Analyst.

HR Manager.

Finance Director.

Engineer.

Teacher.

Who are you outside your email signature?

Learn photography.

Study AI.

Volunteer.

Write.

Coach.

Garden.

Your career should support your life...

not replace it.

🌟 2. Learn Sideways

Sometimes the biggest promotion...

is perspective.

Instead of climbing...

explore.

Operations.

Marketing.

Data Analytics.

Project Management.

Leadership.

AI.

Every new skill becomes another career door.

🌟 3. Become a Builder

Titles impress people.

Builders change organizations.

Find one recurring problem.

Fix it.

Improve a process.

Create documentation.

Mentor someone.

Leave something better than you found it.

That's legacy.

🌟 4. Invest Outside the Building

This one changed my thinking.

Corporate America should never be your only investment strategy.

Build something outside your job.

A blog.

A business.

Rental property.

Dividend portfolio.

Speaking.

Consulting.

Because freedom isn't just earned...

it's built.

🌟 5. Redefine Winning

Ask yourself:

If nobody applauded...

Would I still choose this life?

That's the question.

Because applause fades.

Peace stays.

💡 The Cheeky Chick Career Audit

❓ Ask Yourself

💭 Why It Matters

✅ Action

Does this work still challenge me?

Growth shouldn't stop after promotions.

Learn one new skill every quarter.

Am I energized or simply exhausted?

Burnout isn't a badge of honor.

Audit your calendar and eliminate one unnecessary commitment.

What do I want outside of work?

Careers should fund your life—not consume it.

Create one personal goal unrelated to work.

If money wasn't the issue, what would I spend more time doing?

Passion leaves clues.

Explore that interest one hour a week.

Am I chasing purpose or prestige?

Prestige fades. Purpose sustains.

Write your own definition of success today—not the one LinkedIn sold you.

"The goal isn't to climb every ladder. The goal is to make sure the ladder you're climbing is leaning against the life you actually want." 💛

💋 Final Thoughts: Maybe Success Needs a Promotion Too

Tomorrow morning...

Someone will announce another promotion.

Someone else will update LinkedIn with a shiny new title.

Good for them.

Celebrate them.

Then ask yourself one question...

"Is that the life I actually want—or just the one I've been taught to admire?"

Because somewhere along the way, we've confused movement with meaning.

We've mistaken busyness for purpose.

We've celebrated titles while quietly sacrificing time, health, relationships, and peace.

Here's my hope for every Cheeky Chick reading this:

That you stop feeling guilty because "up" no longer excites you.

That you realize ambition doesn't disappear—it evolves.

That you stop measuring your career by the height of the ladder...

and start measuring it by the quality of the life it's helping you build.

💛 You're not giving up.

🌱 You're growing out.

And sometimes...

that's the bravest promotion you'll ever give yourself.

Stay cheeky. Stay curious. And remember—your career should fit your life, not the other way around.
